And imagine how that cascades out—think about how many perceptions and beliefs and behaviors come with religion. What happens to a person when that falls away?

People who would never think about suicide as an option before the trauma are one example. You have these accounts from Doctors Without Borders and the International Red Cross of religious Syrian refugee mothers leaving their children and killing themselves at sea. That’s a complete reversal of worldview. In their culture and religion, these women would never do something like that, but the trauma is so damaging that it changes everything. These are extreme examples I’m talking about, but the same thing happens when the traumatic event isn’t as severe. Just a few hits are enough to change the course of someone’s reality.
